Identifying ones quarry is very important ethically and due to the
increasing number of species that are becoming endangered. As
hunters, a large portion of our licensing goes to fund biologists to
measure populations and help manage them with limits to insure that we
can show our kids and our grandkids the joys and challenges of hunting.
Areas of protection are purchased by organizations such as ducks
unlimited, and it is a hunters duty to know what birds are legal shoot
and enjoy our sport and take home to provide for our families, and which
ones to simply admire and let fly away, hopefully to recover their
population so we can once again engage them in sport.
In a split second a hunter has to decide weather to pull
the trigger or let the bird go, a moments hesitation can cause the bird
to be out of range, but being a moment premature can damage an entire
species.
The best way we have found to become familiar with the
birds we hunt, is to appreciate them outside of the hunting season.
We are all birders and have traveled all over the world in pursuit of
seeing many types of birds through our binoculars, in addition to
pursuing many of them with shotguns and all sorts of fish on the fly.
The following is a criteria for identifying waterfowl.
